Port Douglas Destination Wedding Guide

Everything you need to know about saying “I Do” in FNQ

With its palm tree lined beaches, balmy temperatures and laid-back vibe, it’s no wonder Port Douglas is one of the most popular spots in Australia for a destination wedding. In fact, over 500 weddings happen in this small coastal town each year!

And while getting married in paradise can be a dream come true, it does take a little bit of extra planning. So, I’ve created this little guide to help you get the info you need to make your day run smoothly.

Setting the Scene: Choosing Your Wedding Venue

Chances are you’ve already scrolled through a hundred tropical wedding photos and felt that little flutter of “yes, that’s the one.” Here’s the catch with a Port Douglas destination wedding, though. Your venue shapes almost everything else, from how many guests can comfortably come, to what time you say your vows, to how the entire day looks in your photos. So, where do you start? I say, start with the feeling you want and go from there.

Keep in mind, these venues are pop-u-lar so it pays to enquire early and get your date locked in as soon as you can.

(For a more in-depth break down of my favourite venues, check out this post)

Beachfront ceremonies

The quintessential Port Douglas ceremony venue has to be Little Cove. A protected patch of grass overlooking the ocean, lined with palm trees. The site is booked in two-hour blocks with a fee of $75-$110. The nearby Sugar Wharf is the classic option for the reception. Ceremonies can be performed on Sugar Wharf as well but keep in mind that it does get very hot in the direct sun so I would caution against it.

Chapels and churches

You can’t Google ‘Port Douglas Wedding’ without coming across the famous St Mary’s Church. The charming chapel holds up to 100 people and overlooks the Coral Sea. Ideally located in town, it makes it a quick walk to your next venue or buses can be organised should you choose somewhere outside of town.

Private estates and hinterland settings

Just because you’re in the tropics, doesn’t mean the beach is your only option. Just outside Port Douglas, the hinterlands offer a completely different vibe. My personal favourite is Port Douglas Lakeside Retreat. Set on a large 14-acre estate in Mowbray, the property boasts two gorgeous Queenslander-style homes and ample room and privacy for a big party. Plus, it means you can do your ceremony and reception all in one place.

Resort and hotel venues

If the thought of coordinating transport between a ceremony, a reception and a dozen guest bookings makes your head spin, a resort venue can take much of that weight off your shoulders. Nirmaya Villas offers a high-end, luxury feel while still keeping the tropical vibe. Perfect for more intimate celebrations.

Whichever setting you lean towards, picture your guests there at golden hour, glass in hand, and notice how it feels.

Timing is everything: The best time of year to get married in Port Douglas

While Port Douglas is beautiful year-round, it is the tropics therefore we have two distinct seasons: Wet and dry.

The dry season, generally May to October, is obviously the most popular time for weddings in Far North Queensland. The weather is typically less humid, rainfall is often lower and the conditions can be ideal for outdoor ceremonies and celebrations. However, there is always the chance of rain and this is the “windy season’, so it’s worth keeping this in the back of your mind. September and October tend to be the sweet spot of blue skies and low winds making it pleasant not only for your wedding but any other activities you might do while you’re in town.

It’s important to take the weather into consideration when choosing a venue. Sugar Wharf for example is beautiful in June/July but a ceremony there in mid-October? Way too hot.

Neither season is automatically off the table. It simply comes down to your priorities and how flexible you can be with your plans.

If an outdoor ceremony is non-negotiable, ask your venue about its wet-weather arrangements before locking anything in. And remember that tropical weather doesn't always follow the forecast. Even in the dry season, having a Plan B is a very good idea.

Turn your wedding into a whole weekend (or more!)

The best thing about a destination wedding is that you’re basically on holiday with all your favourite people, so you might as well make the most of it!

Welcome drinks the day or two before is always a nice way to say hello to everyone and get your guests from different walks of life to meet each other. The Tin Shed, The Surfy and The Yacht Club are easy, casual venues to host this and all of them have a great view.

Port Douglas is also the perfect base for exploring Far North Queensland. Guests can snorkel or dive on the Great Barrier Reef, visit the Daintree Rainforest or Mossman Gorge, spend an afternoon at Four Mile Beach or wander through town's restaurants and Sunday markets. The Daintree Shop on Macrossan Street is a great place to get some info on available tours.
