There’s something pretty special about a wedding at Sugar Wharf, particularly when the sun starts to set. Sitting right over the water on Dickson Inlet, it has that quintessential Port Douglas feel that people come here for. The old-school timber and rustic character of the wharf gives it plenty of charm, while the blank-canvas setup means you can style it to suit your own wedding rather than feeling like you’re working around a pre-set look.
One of the things I love about Sugar Wharf for weddings is that you can have your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all in the one location. There’s no packing up your guests and moving them to another venue. Another popular option is a ceremony at Little Cove or St Mary’s Chapel followed by reception at Sugar Wharf.
St Mary’s by the Sea

Best for: Classic ceremony with a view
Nothing says Port Douglas wedding than this iconic seaside chapel. This heritage-listed church overlooking the Coral Sea is a favourite for couples wanting a traditional ceremony in a stunning setting.
While it can technically hold 100 guests, keeping it closer to 80 makes it more comfortable. This is also a popular venue for destination elopements in Queensland and microweddings.
Little Cove

Best for: Quintessential tropical I do
If getting married beneath swaying palm trees with the ocean as your backdrop sounds like your kind of wedding, Little Cove is pretty hard to beat. Tucked next to the famous Rex Smeal Park, this intimate ceremony spot is what you picture when you think of a tropical wedding.
The beauty of Little Cove is that you really don’t need to over-style it. The natural setting does most of the work. The space works for both a bigger guest list as well as intimate micro-weddings, and is particularly popular for elopements.
The nearby beach, palm-lined park and willow trees give you ample backdrops for your portrait photos before wandering over to a nearby location for your reception.
Little Cove is definitely one of the most popular wedding ceremony locations in Far North Queensland and for good reason.
Port Douglas Lakeside Retreat

Best for: Elegant celebration with a touch of old-world grandeur
Not all Port Douglas weddings are palm trees and sandy beaches. Venture just down the highway to the neighbouring suburb of Mowbray and you’ll find this impressive garden estate that just screams elegance.
Set on 14 acres in the Mowbray Valley, the property is home to two beautifully restored Queenslander-style houses and perfectly manicured gardens that serve as the perfect backdrop for your nuptials.
There’s a real sense of occasion here. It’s understated country elegance takes you worlds away from the tropical resort vibes one might expect from a Queensland wedding. It’s completely private with accommodation for up to 14 guests, making it particularly special for a wedding weekend where your closest people can stay together on the property.

The Grotto

Best for: Hidden rainforest weddings with a wow factor
One you may not have heard of but should definitely be on your radar, The Grotto is tucked amongst rainforest and cane fields, down a hidden pathway into a huge, lush clearing that feels completely removed from the rest of the world.
The space is a true blank canvas, giving you plenty of freedom to create the wedding you want, whether that’s romantic and understated or bold and dramatic. And with towering trees and greenery surrounding you, the setting already brings plenty of atmosphere before you add a single flower.
For me, the magic is that sense of discovery. It feels like you’ve stumbled across your own private piece of the rainforest.
Flames of the Forest

Best for: Dramatic, fairy-tale vibes
There are rainforest weddings, and then there’s Flames of the Forest. Hidden just outside Port Douglas, this is one of those venues that completely transforms once the sun goes down. Hundreds of candles and flames illuminate the rainforest, while a black silk-lined marquee creates an elegant, atmospheric setting for dinner and dancing.
It feels romantic, dramatic and a little bit theatrical. Guests will be transported from Port Douglas by bus adding an air of mystery and once they arrive will be led up a candle-lit path towards the party.
One thing to note is that it is dark, purposefully, so I recommend having a good chat with your wedding photographer and content creator to ensure they are well equipped with lighting etc.
Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort

Best for: Modern beachfront weddings
Sleek, contemporary and right on the beach, Sea Temple suits couples who want a polished resort look without the resort feel. The beachfront boardwalk means you can still have the ocean as your ceremony backdrop before heading up to the poolside function space for the rest of the celebrations.
The in-house wedding team does a wonderful job of taking care of everything that needs to be arranged and your styling options are endless! Added bonus that you can just wander back to your room once the party is over.
